the discarded collected
synopsis
i was invited by the laurentian architecture student association to make the discarded collected, an interdisciplinary installation specifically made for the grand opening of the mcewen school of architecture.
my focus with this work was to honour a discarded piece of wood i found in a firewood pile in my backyard. i carved, sanded and polished sections of this piece of wood in order to question our modern-day obsession with constantly replacing perfectly good objects. as well, i am deeply interested in the value of unique and handmade things. it is my conviction that these objects - handcrafted ones - stand alone and will never be replaced by automated or robotic-made artifacts.
medium
fraxinus americana (white ash), unidentified reclaimed hardwood, red pencil, performance of field recordings and loops played on a roland spd-sx.
